Community support for beautification, environmental education, recycling and conservation

Mountain Glory Festival
[1984]
Annual event in October celebrating handicrafts, music, art and other
attributes of the mountain region. (Operated by City of Marion/Marion Business Association since 1998)

McDowell Business & Industry Development Center
[1986]
A successful business incubator located on the campus of McDowell Technical Community College.

McDowell Tourism Development
[1986]
A permanent, full-time program dedicated to advertising and promotions for McDowell County

Lake James State Park
[1989]
Joint effort of Burke and McDowell chambers of commerce and legislators began in 1986.

Marion Correctional Institution
[1995]
Strong recruitment initiative by chamber and county commission that began in 1990. Today provides over 400 well-paying jobs.

McDowell Chamber Visitor Center
[1995]
Four-year capital campaign to create new quarters on US 221; provides a positive image, visibility and promotions for McDowell County.

Shop Local Campaign
[2005-present]:
Advertising, promotion, networking and consumer awareness for local business community

Inter-Basin Transfer
[2007-08]:
Leadership and initiative in coordinating local opposition to transfer of 36 million gallons of water per day from Lake James to Concord-Kannapolis.

Broadband Expansion Project
[2007-present]:
A focused effort to bring more high-speed internet service to McDowell County residents, students, and existing and prospective businesses. New towers are being acquired to help obtain about 80% coverage of county.

Heritage Grant Program
[2007-present]:
Financial support provided to local non-profits which create and/or administer programs that enhance public understanding of and participation in the county’s cultural assets.

Exa: Historic Carson House; Mtn. Gateway Museum; McDowell Co. Greenway; various festivals & community celebrations.

McDowell House Preservation
[2007-present]:
Active involvement in preserving and restoring the McDowell House.

McDowell Leadership “LINC”
[2008-present] - Leadership, Involvement, Networking & Community Knowledge
Nine-month leadership course on business and community sectors which define local economic, civic and public life.

Workplace Wellness Initiative
[2013]:
A chamber led initiative involving research on the importance of wellness in the workplace that led to the creation of a full-time Community Workplace Wellness Advisor that assists companies and businesses with establishing and maintaining wellness programs.

Career Awareness Readiness Program (CARP)
[2016]:
Developed with the intent of providing middle school students with a nine-month leadership course on business and community sectors which will highlight local career pathways and opportunities.
